Peroxides

Peroxides are the active ingredient in hair bleach and color developers. They open the hair cuticle and remove natural pigment. Without peroxide, permanent color would not work. Hair lightener for dark hair requires a stronger peroxide. Dark hair needs more lift to reach lighter shades. Hair bleach and toner work together. Bleach lightens, and toner adjusts the final color. 20 volume developer is the most common strength. It lifts hair one to two levels. Temporary hair bleach is a gentler option. It lightens slightly without full peroxide strength. Bleach for dark hair should be applied carefully. Dark hair is more resistant and needs longer processing. Powder bleach is mixed with developer before application. The powder-to-cream ratio affects the thickness.

Lighten hair at home takes patience. Going more than two shades lighter is risky without professional help. Hair bleach damages hair if left on too long. Check every ten minutes. Hair bleach powder comes in different strengths. Blue or purple powders help reduce brassiness. Hair developer is measured by volume. 10 volume lifts very little. 40 volume lifts up to four levels. Hair color developer is the same thing as peroxide. It comes in cream or liquid form. Peroxides should never be used alone. Always mix with bleach powder or hair color.
